SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave Therapy

Radial vs. Focused Shockwave Therapy: Key Differences, Conditions Treated, and Usage

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to promote healing in various musculoskeletal conditions. There are two main types:

🔵 Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT or rESWT)

✅ Mechanism:
  • Delivers pressure waves that disperse outward (radially) from the application point.

  • Lower energy, more superficial penetration (typically up to 3–4 cm).

  • Generated pneumatically (using compressed air).

✅ Usage/Applications:
  • More suitable for superficial musculoskeletal conditions and larger treatment areas.

  • Often used in physiotherapy clinics.

✅ Common Conditions Treated:
  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Patellar tendinopathy

  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow

  • Myofascial pain (trigger points)

  • Shin splints

✅ Treatment Characteristics:
  • Broader area of application

  • Typically less painful than focused therapy

  • Requires more sessions (usually 3–6 weekly treatments)

🔴 Focused Shockwave Therapy (FSWT or fESWT)

✅ Mechanism:
  • Emits waves that converge at a specific depth inside the tissue.

  • Higher energy and deeper tissue penetration (can reach 6–12 cm).

  • Generated through electromagnetic, piezoelectric, or electrohydraulic methods.

✅ Usage/Applications:
  • Ideal for deeper structures and precise targeting.

  • Often used in sports medicine and orthopedics.

✅ Common Conditions Treated:
  • Calcific shoulder tendinitis

  • Non-union fractures or delayed bone healing

  • Chronic tendinopathies

  • Deep muscle injuries

  • Avascular necrosis

  • Erectile dysfunction (also treated using focused therapy)

✅ Treatment Characteristics:
  • More targeted and intense

  • Often more uncomfortable (may require local anesthesia)

  • Fewer sessions (1–3 sessions, spaced out)
