How Does The Normatec Pro System Work?

NormaTec Pro 2.0 is often used in the treatment of professional athletics, and it’s utilized for both rehab and recovery by 97% of pro teams, as well as Olympic and elite athletes in many different sports. It is a form of pneumatic compression designed to help speed recovery after strenuous exercise by improving circulation and reducing muscle soreness.

When your muscles are sore after exercising, it’s because of a breakdown of muscle tissue, released metabolites (like lactic acid), and inflammation. If this problem is ignored, these metabolites remain in the legs, and you will experience stiffness and soreness. The Normatec Recovery Massage system is designed to address this issue by draining the legs through rhythmic pumping.

NormaTec pairs compression with massage techniques using three key features:

  • Pulsing action: uses dynamic compression to enhance the movement of fluid and metabolites out of the limbs.
  • Gradients: NormaTec also mimics hold pressures similar to the one-way valves of veins and lymphatic vessels, preventing fluid backflow, and enhancing circulation.

Distal Release:  This feature releases hold pressures once they are no longer needed, ensuring that each portion of the limb gains maximal rest time without a significant pause between compression cycles.

Why Should I Trust It?

The NormaTec system is a clinically proven method to enhance recovery and reduce pain and soreness. This series of technology was founded by a physician and bioengineer (who worked directly with top athletic programs) to help treat circulatory conditions.

At Grasmere Physical Therapy, we like to use Normatec as part of both physical therapy and exercise recovery.  Studies show that this compression system is proven to do the following:

  • Enhance healthy circulation
  • Decrease muscle soreness and fatigue
  • Increase range-of-motion
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Clears buildup of metabolites
  • Speed recovery
  • Promote relaxation

Similar to a massage, each segment of the Normatec attachment will first compress in a pulsing manner and then release. This repeats for each part of the attachment as the compression pattern works its way up your limb, effectively mimicking the muscle pump of the legs to move pain-causing fluid and metabolites out of the limb.  Many treatments last only 15 minutes but provide substantial results for patients.

Recommendations For Usage

The Normatec Pro compression system is beneficial for many different conditions and scenarios. You can use it during a 10 to 20-minute pre-workout routine to promote blood flow and warm up, or during a post-workout routine to speed muscle recovery and decrease stiffness.

It’s also useful for rehabilitation of injuries as well as post-operative therapy. These sessions would most likely utilize the technology for closer to 60 minutes, and would reduce pain, stiffness, and edema. The system can also aid in speeding up healing at incision sites.Your physical therapist at Grasmere Physical Therapy will be able to show you the proper way to use this equipment in the clinic, and should you purchase it on your own to use outside of your appointments, he or she will give you the proper education necessary to make sure you do not injure yourself or damage the equipment.
